Kun-Yang
LIN ( Artistic Director
of Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, assistant professor
of Temple University in Philadelphia ) |
Described as "deeply spiritual, remarkable"
(Dance Magazine), the artistry of Kun-yang Lin’s
work is an unexpected hybrid between Western and
Eastern cultures. Elements of martial arts, calligraphy,
tai chi and Western modern dance are interpreted
by his dancers in a way that promises to "transport
us back to the beginning of humanity and the well-spring
of our beings" (Backstage). Acclaimed throughout
the U.S. ("powerful simplicity", New York
Times), as well as in Taiwan, China, Singapore,
Indonesia, Malaysia, London, Austria, and Mexico,
Lin’s diverse 57-piece repertory knows no
cultural boundaries.
Mr. Lin is acknowledged as one of Taiwan’s
finest choreographers. He has received numerous
awards in Taiwan, including the Taipei National
Theater’s Modern Dance Award, National Endowment
for the Arts Choreography Award, the Domestic Prize
from the Taipei International Community Cultural
Foundation, and the Taiwan Outstanding Artist Award.
At the age of 12, Lin organized the first all-male
dance troupe to perform in his native village of
Hsin Chu after having spent the previous 7 years
directing his three sisters in numerous performances
in his bedroom. His early training in calligraphy,
painting, figure skating and martial arts came to
play a significant role in his development as a
performer and choreographer. Since moving to the
United States in 1994, Mr. Lin has been widely recognized
including, in 2002, by Lisa Jo Sagolla of Back Stage,
who selected Mr. Lin as "the year’s
most promising choreographer."
Mr. Lin has performed as a principal dancer with
Doris Humphrey Repertory Dance Company and the Mary
Anthony Dance Theatre, where he also served as Associate
Artistic Director. In addition, Lin has performed
in the companies of Martha Graham, Anna Sokolow,
Jennifer Muller/The Works, Kevin Wynn Collection,
Paula Josa-Jones and Janis Brenner & Dancers.
He also has collaborated with musicians such as
John Zorn, Ranjit Arapurakal and Animus Music Group
on improvisation projects.
Mr. Lin’s choreography has been presented
throughout the United States as well as in Asia,
Southeast Asia, London, Vienna and Mexico. His work
has been performed by the Martha Graham Dance Company
in Union Square, Dance Compass, Dance Fusion, Blue
Muse Dance, Pick of the Crop Dance, Elizabeth Higgins
Dance Theater, Moving Arts Project, Janis Brenner
& Dancers and Dance Ensemble of Singapore. In
addition, his work has been presented in New York
by Lincoln Center Out-Of-Doors Festival, DanceNow/NYC,
Summer in the Square, Downtown Dance Festival, Dancers
Responding to AIDS, The Taipei Theater, Dixon Place,
SUNY Brockport, New York University, The New York
Theater Festival, The Festival of Creative Communities,
LongHouse Reserve, SPOOL MFG Gallery, Danspace Project
at St. Mark’s Church, the 92nd Street Y, American
Theatre of Actors, and The Joyce SoHo.
Most recently, Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers has performed
at Columbia Festival of the Arts in Maryland, The
Festival Internacional de Danza in Queretaro, Mexico,
Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Jacob's Pillow
Dance Festival, in Philadelphia at The Annenberg
Center, The Painted Bride Arts Center, Temple University
and Fuze Festival at World Café Live, in
New York City at The Japan Society, Symphony Space,
Harry de Jur Playhouse/Abrons Arts Center, Mulberry
St. Theatre, The Center for Architecture, Merce
Cunningham Studio and Dancing on the Plaza, as part
of the Dancing in the Streets Series.
Highly sought as a teacher, Mr. Lin has led master
classes and workshops throughout the U.S., as well
as in Asia, Southeast Asia and England. In addition,
he has been on the faculty of The Yard, Mary Anthony
Dance Studio, H.B. Actor’s Studio, The Limon
Institute and Peridance. Mr. Lin recently served
as Guest Artist at Bryn Mawr College, Beverly Hills
high school and since 2003 has been an Assistant
Professor of Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Mr. Lin was awarded a 2006 grant from Dance Advance,
funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and administered
by the University of the Arts, for the creation
of a new work on Philadelphia-based dancers.
"Lin
employs a highly personalized movement vocabulary
that, with its hint of Eastern flavor, is powerful
and richly communicative." "His choreography
is multi-faceted and extraordinarily impactful --
even after the curtain falls, the viewer remains
ensnared." — World Journal,
2006 "Choreographer Kun-Yang
Lin wades deftly "Upstream" -- He is an
artist of profound concentration and intensity.
He also delves into the connection between man and
nature. And finally, he's not afraid to expose raw
emotion." — The Daily Gazette,
Tivoli, 2005 "Kun-Yang
Lin is an artist for the masses. His work, even
when indefinable, is incredibly captivating for
audiences and dancers alike." —
The Martha's Vineyard Times, 2004
"A dance and choreographic legend unto
himself." — The Strait Times
Singapore, 2004 "An extraordinary
dancer, whose blend of tautness and buoyancy is
not only exciting but also suggestive of the clarity
and immediacy with which dance can communicate deep,
conflicting emotions." —
The New York Times "Beautiful
work by internationally active Kun-Yang Lin, now
teaching at Temple, enriched its Chinese references
with suggestions of Indian dance and Egyptian friezes,
knowing placements of hands and feet, and moments
of surprise." — The Philadelphia
Inquirer "Lin's brilliant
work fertilizes Taiwan's modem dance scene, which
has been waiting for an evolution for a long time
... The Yin and Yang balance perfectly in Lin's
work, bringing us a whole new vision."
— The Min-Shen Daily News, Taiwan |
