Mr. Nelson Kwei

Panel of Judges: Nelson Kwei

Mr Nelson Kwei is an accomplished conductor, music arranger and vocal tutor in the music scene, having attained a Licentiate in singing from the Guildhall School of Music. He won the coveted title of "Most Promising Singer" in an Asian Art Song Competition at the age of 20. Mr Nelson Kwei was also the first choral scholar from Singapore. He was awarded a prestigious scholarship in 1990 by the Ministry of Education to do advance post-graduate studies in Choral Conducting from the Royal Academy of Music in London.

In 1993, Mr Kwei was honoured with the "National Youth Service Award", the highest Youth Award in Singapore, in recognition of his significant contribution in the field of choral art. In 1999, he was awarded with the "Culture Award" by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and in 2001, the Rotary Club honoured him as the "Ambassador of the Arts" for Singapore.

On the international level, Mr Kwei won the prestigious "Outstanding Choral Director Award" two years in a row at the International Choral Competition in Germany, 1998 & 1999 and also the "Best Conductor Award" at the Petr Eben International Choral Competition 2002 & 2004 in Prague. In recent years, he has led his choirs to 8 Gold awards including 3 Category Champions in the Choir Olympic held in Bremen, Germany & Xiamen, China. His choir was also the first Asian choir to win the Grand Prize & Audience Prize at the prestigious Concorso Corale Internazionale held in Riva Del Garda, Italy. This year, he was also conferred the "Conductor Prize" in the recent 10th edition of the internationally-acclaimed choral competition.

Presently, he is a member of the National Arts Council's Advisory Board for Choral Development in Singapore and the Chairman of the Choral Directors' Association (Singapore). Internationally, he is the First Vice-Chairman of the Asian Youth Choir Council, an international federation for choirs & conductors, as well as the Artistic Director of "A Voyage of Songs", an international choral competition held every 2 years. Mr Kwei is also invited as both clinician and adjudicator in many international choral festivals and competitions including the World Choir Games held in Graz, Austria this year. Currently, he is the Conductor of many prestigious schools, colleges and community choirs in Singapore that has won numerous national and international accolades.


Ms. Susanna Saw (Malaysia)

Susanna Saw is a graduate from the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music, Australia. From 1996-1998, she was the tutor for The Australian Boys Choir Institute. Susanna obtained her certificate of Kodaly Teaching from University of Queensland in 2001.

Since her return to Malaysia, she has founded The Young KL Singers and The KL Children's Choir, and is currently a tutor and choir director at the Malaysian Institute of Arts and University of Malaya's Music Faculty choir. She also founded the Young Singers Choral Festival in 2003, an annual young musicians' event in Malaysia dedicated to the increase of choral knowledge through various invited choir tutors from U.K, Denmark, U.S, Croatia and Singapore.

Her latest venture in the choral scene was the establishment of the Young Choral Academy in Kuala Lumpur, a venue for choral lovers to learn more about choral music and a platform for young Malaysian composers and arrangers to compose more choral works.

She was invited by Interkultur Foundation, Germany, to be a member of the Jury at the 1st Asian Choir Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, November 2007, and has been appointed a Choir Olympic Council Member of the Interkultur Foundation. In July 2008, she was a member of the Jury for the 5th World Choir Games held in Graz, Austria. She was also invited to judge at the 21st Paduan Suara Festival organised by the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in August 2008.


Mr. Avip Priatna (Indonesia)

Mr Priatna currently serves as conductor and music director of Parahyangan Catholic University Choir, Batavia Madrigal Singers, Jakarta Chamber Orchestra and teaches vocals at The Resonanz Music Studio. He is also the Artistic Director of the Parahyangan University National Choir Competition.

Having studied choir conducting under Günther Theuring and orchestra conducting under Leopold Hager at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Austria. His choirs have gone on to win many prestigious choral competition in places such as Arezzo, Tours and Marktoberdorf.

Two of them have been invited to participate in International Choir Festival such as the Taipei International Choir Festival, World Choral Symposium in Kyoto, Pollyfolia Choral Festival in Normandy, La Fabrica del canto in Italy and recently the Macau Music festival.Mr Priatna was invited before as the guest conductor of the Orchestra Ensemble in Kanazawa Japan and the Macau Orchestra. He is also the founder of The Resonanz Music Studio in Jakarta.


Mr. Arwin Tan (Philippines)

Arwin Tan studied choral conducting at the University of the Philippines where he graduated magna cum laude and he continued to earn his master's degree in Musicology at the same university. He sang with the Philippine Madrigal Singers under Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion from 1998-2002 and he has been one of the choir's resident arrangers. As a composer, Arwin's compositions and arrangements have resonated in music halls in the Philippines and abroad, particularly in international choral competitions and festivals.

He is the founder and conductor of the Novo Concertante Manila, Grand Prize winner at the first A Voyage of Songs International Choral Competition held in Malaysia in 2003 and gold medalist at the 2nd Choir Olympics in South Korea in 2002 and the 23rd Takarazuka International Chamber Choir Competition in Japan in 2007. He also conducted the University of Asia and the Pacific Chorale, leading it to win the top prizes at the 11th International Sacred Choral Competition in Preveza, Greece. He currently conducts the Cultural Center of the Philippines Chorale, silver medalist at the 3rd Voyage of Songs held in Thailand.

Arwin regularly conducts choral workshops and clinics in the Philippines, as well as in neighboring Southeast Asian countries. He has also served as an adjudicator in national and international choral competitions.

He is currently a member of the faculties of the University of the Philippines - College of Music, the St. Scholastica's School of Music, the Ateneo de Manila University and the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music.
